Things to know when replacing paper health insurance cards with electronic cards

From 2020, the current paper health insurance card will be replaced by electronic cards.

According to the roadmap, at the latest on January 1, 2020, the social insurance agency (social insurance) must issue an electronic health insurance card (health insurance) for participants of health insurance.

According to Vietnam Social Insurance, an electronic health insurance card is a chip card that integrates both the health insurance card and social insurance book, keeping basic information, payment and payment process of participants of social insurance, health insurance and cardholders. Authentication through reader and fingerprint recognition.

Detailed data of electronic insurance cards for participants of social insurance and health insurance will be stored at centralized data centers of the social insurance industry. These data will be retrieved when participants perform transactions such as medical examination and treatment with health insurance and settlement of social insurance regimes.

Electronic health insurance card has many advantages compared to paper cards currently in use. Because the data, signs such as fingerprints, face images, personal identification signs are fully integrated in the card, the card does not need to be republished.

In addition, the entire history of the participants’ illnesses also stored on the card is also more convenient for the process of monitoring and treating the disease. People also do not need to bring identification documents for medical examination and treatment. This helps to avoid profiteering the health insurance fund and borrowing the health insurance card.

Besides, when using electronic health insurance cards, people can also pay health insurance through ATM cards, Internet Banking, and look up information about payment of health insurance.

Those who already have a paper health insurance card will be actively converted to social insurance by the social insurance. During the transition to electronic card, Vietnam Social Insurance still ensures full benefits of patients.
